Audience Survey Questions

Once finishing our final version of our opening we created an audience survey. From this audience survey we are hoping to gain some positive feedback. However, hopefully this survey will also show us some area in which we could have improved upon.

Here are the questions in which we have put together?

  1. What is your age?
  2. Did you enjoy our opening?
  3. Why?
  4. Did you find our opening engaging?
  5. Why?
  6. What do you think our target audience is?
  7. What genre of thriller would you say this is?
  8. Do you feel the font and typography was appropriate to the opening?
  9. Why?
  10. Did you feel that the music over the title sequence was appropriate to the opening?
  11. Why?
  12. Do you think this is a traditional thriller film?
  13. Would you go watch the full film in the cinema?
  14. Do you think the representation of the characters were accurate?
  15. If no, Why?
Here is a link to our survey:

Final version of- The Game

After making all of the improvements listed and from listening to the teachers feedback we have now got an opening which we are proud off. We were also able to complete it before the deadline which meant that we had a little bit of extra time to make any more improvements. This enabled use to adjust our work to make sure that it was to the best of all of our abilities.
From watching our opening I believe we have produced an exciting opening that defiantly has challenged the conventions of a crime thriller.
Below is the final version of The Game:

Second Final Cut- After Improvements

Below is our next cut after the improvements had been completed:

In Wednesdays lessons we showed our teacher this version of our opening. When watching it, it definitely does flow a lot better than what our last cut did.
Here is the feedback we got:
  • Flows a lot better
  • An extremely pleased with it overall
  • Lengthen the title' The Game' for another second so that it can be read.
  • Make the alarm in the opening scene come in a little quicker before the actors start running onto the screen as here it started just a little bit before.
These improvements are now going to be made to our opening to make sure that we have produced a high quality opening which is to the best of all of our abilities.

Feedback from Teachers

In yesterdays lesson myelf and Amy watched title sequence. After the improvements from the first cut had been made I am happy with the overall outcome. After watching it we asked our teachers to watch it to see if there was anything else we could do to improve it before our final deadline.
Below is the first final draft of what they was watched:

Here are the comments in which were given to us for what we could do to improve it and also what worked well:
  • Take out the pictures at the beginning- Now that we have changed around the order of the sequence the pictures not really link in with the rest of it now.
  • Add in more of Daniels ( Cafe Rouge and Chelsea's scenes.- This will allow for more inter-cutting to take place between Chelsea and Daniel
  • During the title sequence the titles needs to come on in a different order:- Before the game was at the end of the titles and the actors names were before this. Here is how we should display it:
  • Canterbury Productions Presents,
  • An AJA Production
  • The Game
  • The music transition from the titles to the next scene is to slow. It almost sounds as if there should be something more as the music carries on. This needs to be adjusted so that the music fades out quicker.
  • From the beginning after the photos to the title sequence it flows well.
  • The sound effect  founds out as the character is still running away. This is good as we didn't just stop it as soon as the ran out of the building.
  • We feel as if we should adjust the level of voice in the MI5 scene to continur with the continuity throughout. Here as some of this was from a re shoot the tone in her voice is slightly different.
  • The varied shots within the MI5 scene was good.
From this feedback it has helped us to realise things that we didn't realise before. When the idea of taking out the images was suggested we first weren't to sure about it but now when watching through the sequence it has become clear that it does not flow like the rest of the sequence does.  This is one area which needs to be sorted. This has allowed for chnges to be made that were storyboarded from the very begginning which we never thought we would change.  From watching it from the first time until now it has become much easier to see the areas in which we could improve upon. Before our final deadline we are going to take these comments into consideration to make sure that we can improve upon it to allow us to produce a good title sequence.

Music

When looking for music we have had some trouble in trying to find a piece of music that would suit our sequence best. When had searched on the Internet to see if we could find something and we also went on Garageband on the macs to see if we could create something that would work better. However we still couldn't find something that would fit in with the sequence.
As we couldn't find a piece of music we asked our teacher if he could play some music that he thinks would be suited. This enabled us to get a better understanding of the music that they would be expecting to here. This then allowed for us to look for some music of the some sort.
After looking on the internet and not being able to find something we looked on our teachers iTunes where we found a piece of music called Moby- Extreme Ways. This piece of music suits our title sequence and also suit the genre of our opening.

Below is think to the music in which we have used.

As this is copyright music we can only use 20 seconds of it.

Reshoot- 22/03/2012

Today we reshoot our MI5 scene. In this reshoot we were focusing on getting some close ups of our female actor. This was decided upon from the feedback that we got back from our teachers and also once we had looked back over the footage we realised where we could improve it after hearing the comments from the teachers.
However we came across some difficulties with the time we wanted to reshoot and also the lighting within the room. When we shot this scene before the room that we used was available. Although when going back today we found out that this room was not and we had to use another room. This wasn't so much of a big issue as we were focusing on close ups and not the tracking shots. We were able to use this room though as we just needed to have the whiteboard in the background so that we could have the picture of our male character projected onto that.
Another problem that we faced was with the lighting in this room. To minimise the amount of light coming in the room we shut the blinds likewise with the other room we had used previously. However when shutting the blinds only one of them would actually shut fully. There was also light coming in from the top of the left hand corner in the room where there are some windows at the top of the ceiling. We could not do anything about these. However to get around most of th problem we covered all windows with black paper. This did effect the lighting in our footage as it was a bright day, we couldn't have done anything to produce the impact of this. When watching this footage once we had filmed it we still thought that it was too bright. This is when we decided that we would need to edit this in the software of Premiere Pro.

Having said all of this, we did actually get all of the footage that we wanted and we were also able to get some extra shots within the time that we had just incase some of the shots can not be used due to light conditions. Overall, I do believe that this was a successful reshoot as we were able to get the footage that we needed and hopefully now we will not need to reshoot anything else from this scene after we have watched the footage back.

Teachers Feedback from our first rough cut

On Thursday, we showed our first rough cut to Mr Ford and Mr Michie. From this discussion we have now realised what we need to do before our final deadline to make sure that we can get the best grade as possible.

Here is the rought cut and the feedback below:

  • Re shoot our cafe rouge scene. Here we need to re shoot this scene because of the sound in the background and also the weather conditions on that day. From looking at our first rough cut, you can tell that is was windy that day as our actor hair is moving. Here we need to re shoot this to make sure that this does not happen again. However this isn't a major problem which wouldn't effect our overall grade as much as some of the other problems.
  • We need to add in some sound over our title sequence. From watching the rough cut back, it doesn't work without sound. However we could not find any music which was appropriate before the deadline so we decided not to add any in as this wouldn't have made it any better.
  • Another idea which was said was having the last scene at the start of our opening and then have the photographs at the end. I am not to sure about this idea.
  • In our last scene we have our two male actors running out of a building. Here when the brief case is thrown to and from, our teachers noticed that the emotions on there faces might portray a comic effect. This is not what we were hoping to create. We do not think that within the amount of time we have got left that we will be able to re shoot this.
  • The beginning title for 'AJA Productions' has a magnifying glass scroll across the screen to make the words stand when it scrolls across them. This is going to fast at the moment and needs to be slowed down to make sure that it can be read properly and also so that the magnifying glass can move across the screen more than once. This would also look better from an audiences point on view.
  • The title sequence with the blue print is too fast. This needs to be slowed down to allow for the names to be read clearly before the next name appears on the screen. By this being slowed down it will mean that the effect will be able to be seen much easier as well.
  • In between our images and our last image of MI5 we have a cross dissolve which takes us into the opening scene. Here when watching our rough cut the teachers found it hard to see this and said that it needs to be slowed down as this is way to fast.
From our teachers feedback it has bought to our attention all of the errors that we have made and what we could do to improve to make sure that our final cut is a higher standard. Most of these errors are small issues but will impact on the whole effect of our opening title sequence. From reading back through the teachers feedback, we do still have a lot of work to do until the final deadline. For example some of the scenes we are considering re-shooting as we are thinking about using different angles to see if we can get more of variety of shot incorporated. This will hopefully help us to improve our title sequence. Overall myself and my group have taken these comments on board and are going to rethink of how we can rearrange our title sequence to make sure that it flows properly.

Choosing a Name For Our Opening Title Sequence

The stage in the development process in which we decided to do was to choose a name for our opening title sequence. When choosing our name for our title sequence we found it hard to choose before we had created our first initial storyboard. Once we had created our initial storyboard it became much easier as we could relate it back to this as we then had our idea drawn out down on paper.

Above is the image of the names we came up with. These names were all based around the idea. When looking at these name ideas we had to decided between too. The two that we were unsure between was 'Chance' or 'The Game'. These two names were original and related to our opening title sequence. The name 'Chance' came from the crown jewels being stolen and the male character taking 'a chance'. The second name ' The Game' came from the whole general theme. However before deciding our overall name we came up with two more idea. One called 'The Job' and one called 'Dice'. However on reflection of these ideas they did not suit our opening nor did they sound appropriate. We decided as a group that 'The Game' fits in with our title sequence much better and also fits in with the genre.

Past Students Work

Now that we have got all of the footage we need, I feel as if I should look at some past students work to help me with the next stage of the process. As I am the main editor, I feel that it would be appropriate if I looked at the editing style and transitions that previous students have used within their work to see what works well and what doesn't and how we can make ours even better.

  •  Titles are black and are clear and easy to read
  • At 0.42 seconds a fade has been used- This is effective as the character transfers from one room to another.
  • The music throughout has helped to build up tension and suspense. As the music is upbeat it sets the atmoshphere.
  • Many cuts are used throughout- speeds up the pace of the footage.

  •  The main character has a shadow effect behind him each time we see him walk past.
  • White titles stand out
  • Music- fits in with atmopshere- very tensed
  • A voice over has been added in over the top of the footage.
  • 1.45- a fade has been used which turns into a blackout for a couple of seconds.
  • At the end the title is all muddled up, an effect has been used to put these words in the right order.  This effect really fits in with the atmosphere as its seems like its being done in a sense of pace/ urgency and if someone is watching someone.

From looking at past students work it has become recognisable how much work needs to go into the editing of our footage to make it a good quality piece of work. From watching the work back again, I noticed how important it was that we changed our music when we did and how important it is to get this right as this plays a massive impact on the scene that is trying to be set.

Preparation for Editing

As I am the main editor, with Josh and Amy over seeing what I am doing and helping to make the decisions on the footage we decide to use, I decided that it would be a good idea if I went back over the steps of using the editing software we are using- Premiere Pro.

Even though we have already started edit the first few bits of our footage, I feel as if this will help me as I will be able to edit the footage a lot quicker if I am more confident with what I am doing. Some of the information I have gone over is the main seven areas of Premiere Pro. This will hopefully help me when it comes to editing the rest of the footage before the first rough cut as it should enable the overall product to be of a much higher standard.

Filming- 25th February 2012

Today, Myself, Amy and Josh went to shoot our next scene at Hughenden Park with our male actor Daniel Pirie. I had never been to this location before so this was the first time that I was able to see the location before we filmed there. When looking around the location I feel as if it was a good place to chose as there were many different areas were we could get a variety of shots. Within this scene we were hoping for someone else to be the second male actor. However, unfortunately neither of the people we asked were able to make the dates that we needed to film on. This is when Josh said that he wouldn't mind being in our title sequence. Even though Josh is within our group, it made it much easier as he knew what he had to do and also was available on the days in which we needed to film.

Throughout the day, I feel as if we got many successful shots that we are going to be able to use. The first shot in which we got, took longer than what we expected. One reason for this was because we had people walking through the archway. This meant that we had to wait for them to walk past before we could continue filming. However this wasn't a massive issue as we weren't restricted to a time scale this time as we were with our previous location.
The day itself was sunny, we meant that we were able to keep the consistancy all the way through. Although even if it wasn't this wouldn't impact on this part of the title sequence as this is 5 years in the past.
Within our location we shot in many different areas. This allowed for a variety of shots and would allow for us to choose which shots worked best. This would also allow for us to show how our criminal has moved around the location.
One of the most successful shots I feel that we got today was when we had our criminal running down the hill which we than panned him coming down. One reason why I feel that this was one of the best shoots was because it was one of the hardest ones of Amy's our main filmer to film.

With this location we didn't really have any major problems/ issue which we feel will effect the overall quality of our title sequence.  Throughout the day, we tried out many different shots to make sure that we got as many as possible so that we have enough footage to chose from and use when editing it all together.
From today's filming, I have realised how important it is to get the lighting correct as when filming outside this can be an issue with the sunlight.
Overall I feel as if we had an extremly successful and productive day as we were able to get everything shot that we needed to and these shots were also useable meaning that this does not need to be reshot.

Below are the images of the various areas of the location we used:

Filming- 23rd February 2012

In Thursday Lesson we continued to progress with our filming. The scene in which we were filming was our MI5 scene. We had previously already filmed this scene, however we needed to include a tracking shot which we weren't previously able to do because the right equipment was not available to use. This is what we had planned to do.
Although, Our female actor Chelsea Davison changed her hairstyle. This wasn't a massive difference but was enough to impact on our work. This meant that within this time we also had to re film these scenes which we had already got. One reason why we re-filmed was so that it is consistent all of the way throughout.
During this time we also had to make sure that we completed the tracking shots as well. As we hadn't done this before the cinematographer (Amy) had to make sure that we had enough time to get enough takes so that we had some footage that we could use. When looking back at the footage of the tracking shots they were very good considering that this was her first time of filming a tracking shot.
When filming this time we also made sure that we got some extras for our actor to talk to so it looks like she is in a meeting talking to people which made it seem more like a real life situation. This is different from our previous shots where we don't have anyone in the scene. The extras will also be shown throughout the tracking shot. From looking back at our first pieces of footage of this scene, I can say that our second shoot was much more successful.

When filming, it was a tight schedule however we were able to complete it. I feel that this filming session was extremely successful. However this did mean that in some of the shots we weren't as successful as others which might mean we will have to re-shoot later on in the process. Having said this we were able to get all of the shoots that we needed. Furthermore I feel as if we knew exactly what we needed to get as from our previous shot we were able to see what we could do again now that we had this opportunity. This allowed for us to improve our work as we had a second opportunity to shoot the scene.Overall I feel as if we had a successful filming session and that we are pleased with the shots we were able to achieve.

Below are a few of the shots that we were able to get on this day:

Deadlines and Plans

These are the deadlines for our coursework:

  • February 29th - Filming needs to be completed. At this stage Post-production should have already started.
  • March 16th- Rough Cut to be presented
  • March 30th- Projects to be completed - Final cuts
  • April 16th- Blog needs to be completed with final evaluations
From looking at these deadlines it has impacted on how we have scheduled to plan our filming and also the editing process. As we already have some footage, it has enabled me to be able to start editing already which will save us time when it comes to editing the rest of the footage as we will now have more time to do so.

From looking at our planned shooting schedule, it will hopefully allow us with enough time to reshoot if we need to.  Our last filming session is on the 23rd February which will leave us with a week to make sure that we have all of the footage that we need.
After we have completed all of our filming, this will leave us with nearly two weeks before our first cut needs to be completed. Hopefully if we get the footage we need and it is a up to a good standard this will allow us with more time to edit as we wont have to reshoot costing us more time that we don't have to spare.

If we keep to our deadlines of what we have made for ourselves for filming we should hopefully have enough time to complete everything else. This will enable us to complete our coursework to a high standard as there will be enough time for me to complete the editing.

Planning and Editing

In Tuesdays lesson, we started to edit some of our footage that we had also shot. As I am the main editor, I started to select the footage in which we were using and Amy and Josh inputted into this.  This then enabled the footage to be cut in the right place.
Whilst I was editing the footage, we thought it would be a good idea for Amy and Josh to review what we had already done and made sure that we were up to date so far. A plan was created to make sure that we could prioritise what should be done next to be able to continue with the project. When making this plan, they took into account the amount of time that we actually have left to complete all of the filming. Our deadline for the filming is on Wednesday 29th February 2012.

Dates:
  • Thursday 16th February - Re-shoot in London
  • Thursday 23rd February - MI5 scene ( based in the classroom)
  • Sunday 23rd February - Criminal scene with both of our male actors.
From these dates it will now help us as a group to prioritise what needs to be done. This will help us to organise ourselves as we are now aware of the time we have left to complete the filming and how important it is for us to keep to these deadlines.

We also started to review our footage from a last filming session with our female actress. From looking at our footage, we have some ideal sections but we will need to intercut some of this so that we can add different shots of the footage together to make sure that we have got the best shots in the title sequence.

Friday 3 February 2012

Filming- 2nd February 2012

Last Thursday, we started to film our MI5 scene with a female actor- Chelsea Davison. I felt as if this was a good filming session. As Amy is our main camera person, myself and Josh watched what was happening and we were also directing our actor. When Amy was filming she made sure she got as many shots has possible. One reason why she made sure of this was so that in all of the shots there must be sections of one of two of them that we are able to use. By doing this it allows for us not to have to re shoot were necessary saving a lot more time for editing the opening.

Overall I think that this filming session was very successful and we as a group can now move onto the next part of the filming/ editing process.

Wednesday 1 February 2012

Animatic

When putting together our animatic, we realised that we didn't have enough footage to cover the whole two minutes. When we thought we had put it together we were 30 seconds short. This the  meant that we missed our deadline for our animatic. By realising that we didn't have enough, we had to think about adding in some more ideas to the end of our sequence. If we found it easier to think of these ideas we might still have been able make the deadline. We had many problems when it came to thinking about ideas to add in. We realised that we wouldn't be able to add anything in into the middle of the sequence. One reason why we couldn't do this was because it would interfere with he material we already had and by doing this we might also have had to change some of our other ideas.

Once considering all of our ideas that we had, we decided that the only way our title sequence would still make sense and wouldn't ruin the ideas we already had was to add more scenes in at the end.  This is when we came up with the idea of adding in a scene were we went back five years to a incident that had already happened.

When reviewing our problems and mistakes it become recognisable that we wouldn't have had these problems if we had properly thought about the timings of each transition and shot length. For example we could have actually estimated how much we actually had and how long a transition was. By doing this it would have allowed us to be aware of the length of the sequence and i we needed to add anything else, this could have been completed by the deadline.

Now that our animatic is now completely finished, we need to make sure that we make the rest of our deadlines so that we are back on track. The next stage that we need to do is to finish and to continue filming. Once we have got some of our footage, this will then enable is to start editing this, which will hopefully give us more time to finish of the editing and make sure our final title sequence it to a high standard if we start it earlier whilst we are still filming.

Below is our animatic:

Mixmag Presentation

In todays lesson, I presented my presentation. Below is a copy of the presentation:

Saturday 28 January 2012

More scenes

After finishing our animatic in our previous lesson last week it become noticeable that we hadn't got enough ideas in our storyboard. Once watching the animatic back and seeing how long our transitions were we are 0.35 seconds sort. Instead of adding some scenes in, in the middle of the sequence we have decided to focus on after the blue print ( titles) have appeared on the screen.

In the lesson today we were finding it extremely hard to think about what could possibly go after this blueprint. Firstly we couldn't decide whether or not to create a whole new scene or continued with what had happened before. We decided that we should start a new scene as this wouldn't look right if we carried it on after the blueprint (titles) had finished. After a long discussion we all came to the agreement with one idea that we think will fit in with the rest of our story and also our theme. The idea that we came to agree on was going back in time (five years ago). By going back in time it meant that we could then fit this in with our current story. Before coming up with this idea we did come up with an idea that could have been put before the start of the material we already had. However in discussion with our teacher we realised that this would not work as it would interfere with the material we already had. By adding in a completely new scene after has allowed for us to add something different but still along the same lines of what we already had.

Below is the next few shots which we have storyboard:

Second Thoughts on the Music

In the lesson today, one of the members of the group mentioned that after reviewing and listening to the music for a second time, it actually wouldn't be suitable for the atmosphere we were trying to create. The music in which we were going to use was the 'Mission Impossible'. However this was not suitable for the genre of the title sequence we were creating. After this had been bought to attention, the rest of the group re listened to this music and it did come to our attention that it was not appropriate. When this was mentioned we thought it would be a good idea to again, re look back at our research of the music used in the genre we were interested in.

After rethinking our music idea another soundtrack came up which was called 'Sinnerman'. When listening to this, it was instantly recognisable that this soundtrack would not be suitable either.
Here is extract below of the soundtrack.

Since we could not find the appropriate music, we decided to all go away and research some different music for ourselves and feedback to the group in our next lesson. Although when feeding back to the group we still realised that none of the music found was at all relevant or would not fit in with our genre and therefore we were unable to agree on a piece of music that we wanted to use.
One of the members of the group then went onto the piece of software on the Macs called 'Garageband'.  Here a piece of music was found called 'Collions Avenue'. When the rest of the group listened to this piece of music. This piece of music was what we were looking for. It has to same feel to the others pieces which was quite peaceful and jazzy, however there was the suspense and tension which we were hoping to find it would add to the atmosphere of something building up.

Below is a short extract of the music we have decided upon:

As we have now agreed on the music we are going to use, we can now add this to our animatic. Secondly, now we have decided on this music, it will also allow for us to get a feel of how our final title sequence will be like. Now that the music has been decided up it will also appear us to finish putting together our title sequence for our animatic.

Filming- Saturday 21st January 2012

On Saturday, myself and my group went to do some filming at one of our locations. This location was Cafe Rouge in Gerrard's Cross. This location was decided upon due to a rustic and authentic atmosphere. We felt as if this would fit in with our film and also wouldn't be being stereotypical. Furthermore this location was easy for the group to get to.We had our main male actor ( Daniel Pirie) there as well so that we could shoot the cafe scene.

When filming we came across a few issues that we have to adapt round. The first issue that as Cafe Rouge had previously mentioned to us that we could only film outside their cafe between the hours of 3pm and 4pm we weren't able to film earlier on in the day meaning that we were unable to break previous stereotypes. Other issue that we had to get around was that it was on a road, the interference of cars and the engines are in our shoots occasionally. This issue also came across when customers were coming in and out of the cafe. This meant that we had to re-shoot meant of our shoots when it was clear making sure that we had that no cars were driving past. When re-shooting we round that we had to hurry up as it was getting darker and we originally only had an hour to film in. Another issue that we had to overcome was that the pavement was on a small slope meaning that it become difficult to place the tripod in exactly the position that we were hoping for. However I do feel that we got all of the shots that we needed for this scene in our opening.

Overall I feel that we had a very successful day filming. We were able to get all of the shots that we needed. From this filming session, it has become recognisable to me how many time we needed to re-shoot one particular shot to get it right. This say has also helped me to realise how much more work we need to put into our filming when it comes to the rest of our opening. Now that we had got this footage we can now as a group progress and see what other footage we need before we start to edit our opening.

Ownership, Expansion and New Media Technologies

Last week on Monday, we were given a task to complete by the following week. This task involved us being given the name of a magazine and researching about the magazine. With this information we had to create a PowerPoint presentation.

Ownership:
  • Who Publishes the magazine?
  • Which other titles do they publish?
  • Are there any particular sectors of the Magazine Industry that they dominate?
  • What is their parent company?
  • What/who else do they own?
The Magazine:
  • How has the magazine expanded diagonally?
  • How does the magazine make use of the new media technologies and / or social media?
  • How does the magazine promote the other arms of its business within its pages?
  • Would you argue that the magazine has created a 'brand' for itself? How?
  • Complete and analysis of the front cover, contents, editors letter and feature pages - how does the magazine appeal to its readers?
The magazine I have been given to research is Mixmag. This magazine is based on the music and clubbing industry.

Cloud: You can access any document from where ever you are. This includes the use of either the iCloud or Drop Box. These documents can be accessed on your computer, mobile phones etc.

This lesson has helped me to understand the key terms that are related to this topic. It has also helped me to understand how the media industry has developed and is still developing.

Pigeon Impossible

Throughout the past few weeks we have been considering the idea of having a shot as if the camera was taking the image and also the sound that the camera would make. For example this would happen in the establishing shots at the beginning of the opening. However when in discussion we we finding it hard to agree on the time length that the shot should be and also the sound of this. We also came up with the idea that we should put text on top of the shots at the button of the screen simply saying the location and also the time. We felt as if this would fit in well with our story. We also had an idea of this sound, however we couldn't find the right sound to influence us. The sort of sound for this would be a typewriter.

The extract below is of Pigeon Impossible, which is based slightly around Mission Impossible. From watching this extract at a time of 0.11 seconds the text comes onto the screen. The sound that happens here ( a typewriter) is the sound that we in discussion about using in our title sequence. Secondly, after watching this, there is another aspect at the time of 0.32 seconds that we are again considering of using in our title sequence. At this time there is the sound of the camera and several images being taken of items and people and shown on the screen with only a second in between. This is the idea that we are planning to do on the location shot of The London Eye and Buckingham Palace.

From watching this short extract, it has helped me to visualise how our title sequence is now going to be edited. For example we now the sound that we wish to use for when the text is being displayed on the screen. This has also helped us all to understand the sound of the camera that we were planning on using and also how long the image should be on the screen for. This will now help us to progress with planning our coursework and also help when it comes to editing our title sequence.

Other Locations

To be to continue with the developing process we need to think of a location where we can shoot the criminal who is walking down an alley. In discussion with the group, Amy said she knew of any alley near where she lives that might be appropriate for this scene. Below are the images that Amy went away and took.

As a group we need to discuss this location and see what each other thinks about it. Personally, I feel that it doesn't fit into our storyboard. Secondly, I feel that is is very stereotypical. We wanted to try and avoid this as alley ways have been used before in crimes. Furthermore the graffiti that is on the wall does not fit in with our storyboard. Although, the idea of having the brick walls in the background is a possibility that we need to discuss as a group.
From these images it is clear that if we were to use this location is would be very stereotypical. We now need to rethink our idea and see what other locations we can think of that aren't stereotypical. However from these images it has helped us to now understand that we need to avoid this idea. This will now hopefully allow us to move on with our coursework and continue planning.

Final Copy of the Script

After we all has looked over the script we decided that we needed to shorten it as it was to long. To re-write this script we all went aay and thought about how we could improve it. We decided that we needed to take parts out that weren't necessary as they weren't benefiting the title sequence in anyway. Furthermore we also felt that we need o cut down the dialogue for our female character.  This was to wordy and was too long to be able to keep the audience attention.  In addition to the above our script has had the change due to a change in our storyboard which has taken an impact on the opening and the middle of our title sequence.

The Crown Jewels Draft 2
From us all thinking about the script and deciding to re-write some of the main parts has helped us with the development of our title sequence and also the has helped with oue understanding of how a title sequence should be. From looking at this script and then the storyboard,  I can now visualise the opening of our title sequence. From re storyboarding it definatley helped when it came to editing the script as we could take a lot of the script out that wasn't needed anymore.

The Three Types of Expansion

In today's lesson we learnt about the different types of expansion. Below are the example of the three different types and an explanation of what they mean.
Horizontal:
This type of expansion is when one type of media for example a television programme joins forces with another company along the supply chain. This other company also are based around television production. The type of expansions means that the companies cannot move up or down within the supply chain as they are staying static but are just joining forces.
Vertical:
This expansion is when one media group for example a TV production ( TV Marketing Company) company merges with another company who are associated with another type of media. For example TV Distribution. This could make the two companies either go up the supply chain or result in going down.

Diagonal/Lateral:
Diagonal or Lateral expansion is when one media expands into a different type of media to be able to expand upon their own business. For example TV production might expand into web pages, games, magazines  print media), Apps. This allows media companies to go to completely different media sectors.

From this lesson, I know understand an aware of the three different types of expansion and how they effect what happens in the media industry. Furthermore I understand the supply chain and how media can move up or down in the supply chain.

Lighting

To be able to create different atmospheres we played around with the lighting. To do this we got a lamp and turnt the lights off. Here we investigated with different light sources. By investigating different light sources it allowed us to see how bright we wanted the projector to be. The two types of lighting are high key lighting and low key lighting.

Low Key Lighting: This lighting has a dark atmosphere and mainly includes the colours of black and grey.  This lighting is created by a back light. This produces light in dark areas which can be effective for example when creating a thriller film.

High Key Lighting: This aims to reduce the ratio of lighting in a scene. This is the opposite to low key lighting. Here we see that white is mainly used along with bright colours which signifies a happier atmosphere. Whereas with low key lighting the colours of black and grey are used which creates a dull atmosphere.

In our title sequence we are planning on having the criminals face being projected onto a whiteboard from a projector. Here we are going to use inter cutting between the police officer and the criminal. When the inter-cutting is taking place it would be best to use low key lighting. One reason why it would be best to use low key lighting is because when we are inter cutting the criminal walking we want to create a dark atmosphere. This will help to set the scene. By using low key lighting it will also help us to create a tensed atmosphere which is what we are hoping to create.
From looking into the different types of lighting has now enabled use to visualise the atmosphere we wish to create when using low key lighting.

Music for our Title Sequence

To continue with our coursework we researched into the different music we could use for our opening title sequence. We wanted to try and find something that would suit our theme and also the atmosphere of our title sequence. If we were going to use non copy right music is means that we can only use 20 seconds of this without it being illegal. To find our music for our title sequence we decided to look on YouTube as we thought this would be a useful and appropriate place to find some music. When looking on Youtube we decided that the theme tune of Mission Impossible would suit our title sequence and also fit in with the theme of it. However by using this theme tune we are restricting our titles as we can only legally use 20 seconds of this tune, therefore meaning that are titles can only be 20 seconds long. From listening to this clip we do believe it is the ideal piece of music to go along with our coursework and we feel it would work well when the final product has come together. From the theme tune we believe from 0.03 seconds to 0.23 seconds would be appropriate for out titles and our idea of for the titles. For the titles we are going to have a blue print in the background but it will be coming onto the screen as if its being drawn or put together as the titles appear. One reason why this piece of music would suit this is because its quite fast and also is upbeat. Furthermore it also  fits in with our theme and is quite mysterious.

How to use Premiere Pro

In todays lesson, Josh gave a presentation on how to use the software which we will be using to put together our title sequence for out coursework. The software that we will be using is Adobe Premiere Pro.
To start the presentation he told us how important the seven main areas of premiere are. These are:
  • Format
  • Layout
  • Import
  • Timetable and Edits
  • Transitions
  • Texts and Effects
Format
When using a Sony video camera they record by using pixels by inch. It is important to choose the correct format because if you don't the overall end product wont be of a good quality or can could be pixilated. When importing anything onto the software it is important to look for the correct file. The file we will be using is Sony AVCHD 1080i 25 (50i). He also talked about the size of the screen and how it can effect the quality. He explained that films usually use a wide screen of 16:9 inches and a standard screen is usually 4:3 inches which is a square frame. For example this is used on TVs. When creating our animatic we will be using a standard size. We would use this because our storyboard have been created in the shape of squares.

Layout
The main important aspects of the layout are the timeline and the footage boxes at the top of the screen. The timeline is at the bottom half of the screen. The two boxes (screens) that appear at the top display your sequence so  far( the one of the right) and the clip you are editing ( the one of the left). All of the imported images and videos are displayed on the left hand side of the screen where they can be dragged into the timeline where ever you want them. When placing something into the timeline you can zoom in or out by using the control under neath the timeline. Furthermore at the bottom right hand corner of the screen there are tools such as the selection and razor tool.

Import
To import an image or video onto premiere you first need to make sure that the selected image are in the correct format and also are on the computer itself and are off the camera. When on premiere, to import these files you must click on the button called 'Import'. This is located under the file button. Once the files have been imported they will appear on the left hand side of the screen. These can then be dragged into the timeline and be edited.

Timeline and Edit
Throughout this section, Josh talked about the timeline and the information within the timeline. The timeline collects the footage, image and text. When a certain clip has been dragged into the timeline the red line acting as a selection tool can be used. This tool allows the user to select where they wish to play there sequence from. This tool can also be used when cutting a piece of footage to make sure that they cut it in the right place. Although when cutting you can always drag the footage to the right and it will expanded again up to the amount of footage what is there. To watch your footage you can press the space bar button which will play from where the red line ( selection tool) is situated on your timeline. You can also just simply press the play button to watch the footage as the project progresses. When editing the footage a red horizontal line may appear. When this lines appears it means that the project has not been rendered. To render, all you need to do is press the enter button. By rendering it makes the footage run smoother when being played allowing for the user to see the footage better without it stopping in between. Another tool that can be used to edit the footage is the razor tool. This tool allows the user to cut up the film into smaller sections. However with this tool you can not gain back to footage if you cut it in the wrong place as in this case you are separating the footage.

Transitions
Underneath where the imported footage is placed there is a transition box. Here the user can insert different transition into their footage to create many different effects. One transition which was shown was a 'dissolve'. When selecting this clip and placing it onto the timetable a black/white box will appear over your clip where it has been placed. To get rid of this the effect needs to be placed in between two clips so that when dissolve will happen on both clips.

Text and Effects
In our title sequence we will need to create text which will be displayed over our film. To do this select 'new title' which is located in the menu of 'title'. A separate window will then appear. Here our are able to select and type in the text that you want and also the style that you want it to be displayed in. When you have finished click the 'X' in the top left hand corner. By doing this the text will now appear in the box where the imported footage is displayed. This allows the user to select where in the timeline they want to put this text. To add effects to the text and titles you need to go to the effects tab which is located in the middle part of the top of the page. An example that was shown was how to move text. To do this the text must be selected and you need to select where you want the text to move to. There is then an icon which looks like a clock which the users clicks on and then move the text back to the position it started at.

This presentation has enabled me to know the basics of how to use Adobe Premiere Pro. By now knowing how to edit on this software will help hugely when it comes to editing our coursework. For example we will now be able to insert in different effects and transitions. This should hopefully help with our coursework  by using the different effects where they are needed and by adding in text it might help us to achieve a higher grade. This presentation has helped me understand how to use the programme as this is my main role within my group. I will know be able to edit the footage quicker and hopefully more effectively.

Filming

From today's discussion, I have realised how much extra footage we actually need and how important it is to have more footage than what we actually need. By having more footage than what we actually need will mean that we have the possibility of being able to select what we wish to use. Whereas, if we had a limited amount of footage this would restrict us as we wouldn't be able to choose our footage as we could only use what we have got. To be able to start our editing stages later on in the process we need to have at least 20 minutes of footage. By having 20 minutes of footage it will allow for us to cut out the footage and use the best parts of it. Our title sequence is going to be 2 minutes long. By having 20 minutes of footage it also allows.

Furthermore when filming the continuity needs to be the same throughout. When shooting we need to have the same type of weather conditions. By having the same type of weather conditions it means that it will keep the consistency and also the atmosphere the same. This is vital that we get this right when filming to ensure that a good amount of footage that we can select what we are going to use from it. In addition to the above the actors need to be wearing the same outfit on all shooting days and also not have changed anything in terms of appearance. For example type of hair cut or hair colour. Without keeping factors like these the same the title sequence won't flow properly and therefore the continuity will not be the same.

Institutional Models

There are three main Institutional Models try to illustrate the relationship between institutions and audience. One model is a theoretical set of ideas. This attempts to explain/ make clear events that we perceive in the real world.

The Manipulative Model

One of the most common models is the manipulative model. This idea sees the audiences as passive and the ways of thinking are easily changed by the media products which they consume. The media and what it portrays and produces is controlled by a few powerful individuals. These individuals can be defined by gender (male), class (middle Class). This ensures that the ideas and values are widely believed and accepted. This is seen as a conscious process. Here, institutions are purposely manipulating their audiences. For example when the media present this as 'news' the audience are led to believe that the representations are the full truth and these are accepted as 'real'.

The Pluralist, Or Market Model

The different ways of thinking about the media can be sometimes called the Pluralist, or the market model. The belief is that different groups of people are constantly competing for audiences. The most successful manage to appeal to the bigger audiences. The model below also suggests that the Pluralists are very active in how they costume and choose their media. If the institutions don't follow the model below they will risk losing a large proportion of its audiences.

The Hegemonic Model

The third model, rests between the two views of the models stated above. The Hegemonic model acknowledges a considerable amount of the media is controlled  by a relatively  small group of people. The viewpoints are embedded into the products that are produced, though promotion of the views is rarely conscious. The dominant views are seen as 'normal' or 'common-sense'. These are given greater emphasis to build up a consensus or agreement among the audience. Although, this is not the case for all of the audience. Some of the audience will try to resist the process, by making choices about their purchase and consumption of products which are challenging the idea of consensus.

Second Draft of the Script

After reading over the script several time, we as a group decided that we needed to look back over the script and make some of the dialogue clever and more straight forward. One reason for this is because if the dialogue is to long, its going to distract the audiences attention as they wont want to listen to this. After reading over the script we sat down and decided on the parts that needed to be redrafted.
The first part that we decided to look back over was when the female protagonist is in a dark room with an image of Hugo being reflected from a projector onto the wall.

Below is the first part of the script we have decided to edit.

Female in suit

Hugo Grant, the main man, the insider. He's is the one that thinks it all up, the brains. He's is in a class of his own, only does the big raids, never been convicted. It's is a matter of pride, of every fraud investigator in the country, no the world, to get this man behind bars. He has stolen things that you would never believe, The Mona Lisa, The Shrouds of Turin, The Works of Shakespeare, The Leo Diamond and The Scream to name some. Rumours are that this is his last score. We miss him this time, it is game over, no second chances.

He is not about robbing little old ladies out of their pensions. He is the big league. Stealing to order.
Hugo Grant thinks he is cleverer then us, he thinks he has the upper hand, but there is no way he can get away this time. Lets catch him, Lets prove him wrong.

When looking back over this section of the script, I believe that it needs to be more straight forward and to the point. One reason for this is because if we do not cut this bit down its going to be to long for the actual scene and also this is not going to keep the audience interested.  Above I have underlined in red the parts of the script that I believe don't need to be there. However, when taking sections out there is also the opportunity the rephrase some areas which will make it less wordy. In blue and underlined are the parts that could be added in. This section of the script does need editing more, but this is what I first though could be edited. Once we have looked at the script and edited some parts of it we are going to piece it together and see if it is any better to what it was before.
