Mixmag Presentation

In todays lesson, I presented my presentation. Below is a copy of the presentation:

More scenes

After finishing our animatic in our previous lesson last week it become noticeable that we hadn't got enough ideas in our storyboard. Once watching the animatic back and seeing how long our transitions were we are 0.35 seconds sort. Instead of adding some scenes in, in the middle of the sequence we have decided to focus on after the blue print ( titles) have appeared on the screen.

In the lesson today we were finding it extremely hard to think about what could possibly go after this blueprint. Firstly we couldn't decide whether or not to create a whole new scene or continued with what had happened before. We decided that we should start a new scene as this wouldn't look right if we carried it on after the blueprint (titles) had finished. After a long discussion we all came to the agreement with one idea that we think will fit in with the rest of our story and also our theme. The idea that we came to agree on was going back in time (five years ago). By going back in time it meant that we could then fit this in with our current story. Before coming up with this idea we did come up with an idea that could have been put before the start of the material we already had. However in discussion with our teacher we realised that this would not work as it would interfere with the material we already had. By adding in a completely new scene after has allowed for us to add something different but still along the same lines of what we already had.

Below is the next few shots which we have storyboard:

Second Thoughts on the Music

In the lesson today, one of the members of the group mentioned that after reviewing and listening to the music for a second time, it actually wouldn't be suitable for the atmosphere we were trying to create. The music in which we were going to use was the 'Mission Impossible'. However this was not suitable for the genre of the title sequence we were creating. After this had been bought to attention, the rest of the group re listened to this music and it did come to our attention that it was not appropriate. When this was mentioned we thought it would be a good idea to again, re look back at our research of the music used in the genre we were interested in.

After rethinking our music idea another soundtrack came up which was called 'Sinnerman'. When listening to this, it was instantly recognisable that this soundtrack would not be suitable either.
Here is extract below of the soundtrack.

Since we could not find the appropriate music, we decided to all go away and research some different music for ourselves and feedback to the group in our next lesson. Although when feeding back to the group we still realised that none of the music found was at all relevant or would not fit in with our genre and therefore we were unable to agree on a piece of music that we wanted to use.
One of the members of the group then went onto the piece of software on the Macs called 'Garageband'.  Here a piece of music was found called 'Collions Avenue'. When the rest of the group listened to this piece of music. This piece of music was what we were looking for. It has to same feel to the others pieces which was quite peaceful and jazzy, however there was the suspense and tension which we were hoping to find it would add to the atmosphere of something building up.

Below is a short extract of the music we have decided upon:

As we have now agreed on the music we are going to use, we can now add this to our animatic. Secondly, now we have decided on this music, it will also allow for us to get a feel of how our final title sequence will be like. Now that the music has been decided up it will also appear us to finish putting together our title sequence for our animatic.

Filming- Saturday 21st January 2012

On Saturday, myself and my group went to do some filming at one of our locations. This location was Cafe Rouge in Gerrard's Cross. This location was decided upon due to a rustic and authentic atmosphere. We felt as if this would fit in with our film and also wouldn't be being stereotypical. Furthermore this location was easy for the group to get to.We had our main male actor ( Daniel Pirie) there as well so that we could shoot the cafe scene.

When filming we came across a few issues that we have to adapt round. The first issue that as Cafe Rouge had previously mentioned to us that we could only film outside their cafe between the hours of 3pm and 4pm we weren't able to film earlier on in the day meaning that we were unable to break previous stereotypes. Other issue that we had to get around was that it was on a road, the interference of cars and the engines are in our shoots occasionally. This issue also came across when customers were coming in and out of the cafe. This meant that we had to re-shoot meant of our shoots when it was clear making sure that we had that no cars were driving past. When re-shooting we round that we had to hurry up as it was getting darker and we originally only had an hour to film in. Another issue that we had to overcome was that the pavement was on a small slope meaning that it become difficult to place the tripod in exactly the position that we were hoping for. However I do feel that we got all of the shots that we needed for this scene in our opening.

Overall I feel that we had a very successful day filming. We were able to get all of the shots that we needed. From this filming session, it has become recognisable to me how many time we needed to re-shoot one particular shot to get it right. This say has also helped me to realise how much more work we need to put into our filming when it comes to the rest of our opening. Now that we had got this footage we can now as a group progress and see what other footage we need before we start to edit our opening.

Ownership, Expansion and New Media Technologies

Last week on Monday, we were given a task to complete by the following week. This task involved us being given the name of a magazine and researching about the magazine. With this information we had to create a PowerPoint presentation.

Ownership:
  • Who Publishes the magazine?
  • Which other titles do they publish?
  • Are there any particular sectors of the Magazine Industry that they dominate?
  • What is their parent company?
  • What/who else do they own?
The Magazine:
  • How has the magazine expanded diagonally?
  • How does the magazine make use of the new media technologies and / or social media?
  • How does the magazine promote the other arms of its business within its pages?
  • Would you argue that the magazine has created a 'brand' for itself? How?
  • Complete and analysis of the front cover, contents, editors letter and feature pages - how does the magazine appeal to its readers?
The magazine I have been given to research is Mixmag. This magazine is based on the music and clubbing industry.

Media Ownership

Media Convergence: Media institutions which are being merged together to form one.

Globalisation: Media companies are now dealing with a bigger market. This means that there is going to be the need to expand.

Multi-Media: More than one type of media.

Convergent: When more than one media group merge together.

RSS Reed:  This updates any news feed automatically meaning resulting in the movement away from searching on the Internet.

Common Digital Storage (CDS): Any type of technology that can store digital information. This could include videos, music, images and documents. Devices that could hold these are:  Mobile Phones, USBs and Hard Drives

Internet: A Group of computer which allows users to connect with each other.

World Wide Web ( WWW): The format a certain website is displayed in. For example HTML.

Web 2.0: This is the second phase of the Internet. This phase has now moved into social media.

Web 3.0: This is third phase. However it is run by Apps. By it being run by apps it means that it is inbuilt and packaged into a certain device.

Cloud: You can access any document from where ever you are. This includes the use of either the iCloud or Drop Box. These documents can be accessed on your computer, mobile phones etc.

This lesson has helped me to understand the key terms that are related to this topic. It has also helped me to understand how the media industry has developed and is still developing.

Pigeon Impossible

Throughout the past few weeks we have been considering the idea of having a shot as if the camera was taking the image and also the sound that the camera would make. For example this would happen in the establishing shots at the beginning of the opening. However when in discussion we we finding it hard to agree on the time length that the shot should be and also the sound of this. We also came up with the idea that we should put text on top of the shots at the button of the screen simply saying the location and also the time. We felt as if this would fit in well with our story. We also had an idea of this sound, however we couldn't find the right sound to influence us. The sort of sound for this would be a typewriter.

The extract below is of Pigeon Impossible, which is based slightly around Mission Impossible. From watching this extract at a time of 0.11 seconds the text comes onto the screen. The sound that happens here ( a typewriter) is the sound that we in discussion about using in our title sequence. Secondly, after watching this, there is another aspect at the time of 0.32 seconds that we are again considering of using in our title sequence. At this time there is the sound of the camera and several images being taken of items and people and shown on the screen with only a second in between. This is the idea that we are planning to do on the location shot of The London Eye and Buckingham Palace.

From watching this short extract, it has helped me to visualise how our title sequence is now going to be edited. For example we now the sound that we wish to use for when the text is being displayed on the screen. This has also helped us all to understand the sound of the camera that we were planning on using and also how long the image should be on the screen for. This will now help us to progress with planning our coursework and also help when it comes to editing our title sequence.

Other Locations

To be to continue with the developing process we need to think of a location where we can shoot the criminal who is walking down an alley. In discussion with the group, Amy said she knew of any alley near where she lives that might be appropriate for this scene. Below are the images that Amy went away and took.

As a group we need to discuss this location and see what each other thinks about it. Personally, I feel that it doesn't fit into our storyboard. Secondly, I feel that is is very stereotypical. We wanted to try and avoid this as alley ways have been used before in crimes. Furthermore the graffiti that is on the wall does not fit in with our storyboard. Although, the idea of having the brick walls in the background is a possibility that we need to discuss as a group.
From these images it is clear that if we were to use this location is would be very stereotypical. We now need to rethink our idea and see what other locations we can think of that aren't stereotypical. However from these images it has helped us to now understand that we need to avoid this idea. This will now hopefully allow us to move on with our coursework and continue planning.

Final Copy of the Script

After we all has looked over the script we decided that we needed to shorten it as it was to long. To re-write this script we all went aay and thought about how we could improve it. We decided that we needed to take parts out that weren't necessary as they weren't benefiting the title sequence in anyway. Furthermore we also felt that we need o cut down the dialogue for our female character.  This was to wordy and was too long to be able to keep the audience attention.  In addition to the above our script has had the change due to a change in our storyboard which has taken an impact on the opening and the middle of our title sequence.

The Crown Jewels Draft 2
From us all thinking about the script and deciding to re-write some of the main parts has helped us with the development of our title sequence and also the has helped with oue understanding of how a title sequence should be. From looking at this script and then the storyboard,  I can now visualise the opening of our title sequence. From re storyboarding it definatley helped when it came to editing the script as we could take a lot of the script out that wasn't needed anymore.

The Three Types of Expansion

In today's lesson we learnt about the different types of expansion. Below are the example of the three different types and an explanation of what they mean.
Horizontal:
This type of expansion is when one type of media for example a television programme joins forces with another company along the supply chain. This other company also are based around television production. The type of expansions means that the companies cannot move up or down within the supply chain as they are staying static but are just joining forces.
Vertical:
This expansion is when one media group for example a TV production ( TV Marketing Company) company merges with another company who are associated with another type of media. For example TV Distribution. This could make the two companies either go up the supply chain or result in going down.

Diagonal/Lateral:
Diagonal or Lateral expansion is when one media expands into a different type of media to be able to expand upon their own business. For example TV production might expand into web pages, games, magazines  print media), Apps. This allows media companies to go to completely different media sectors.

From this lesson, I know understand an aware of the three different types of expansion and how they effect what happens in the media industry. Furthermore I understand the supply chain and how media can move up or down in the supply chain.

Lighting

To be able to create different atmospheres we played around with the lighting. To do this we got a lamp and turnt the lights off. Here we investigated with different light sources. By investigating different light sources it allowed us to see how bright we wanted the projector to be. The two types of lighting are high key lighting and low key lighting.

Low Key Lighting: This lighting has a dark atmosphere and mainly includes the colours of black and grey.  This lighting is created by a back light. This produces light in dark areas which can be effective for example when creating a thriller film.

High Key Lighting: This aims to reduce the ratio of lighting in a scene. This is the opposite to low key lighting. Here we see that white is mainly used along with bright colours which signifies a happier atmosphere. Whereas with low key lighting the colours of black and grey are used which creates a dull atmosphere.

In our title sequence we are planning on having the criminals face being projected onto a whiteboard from a projector. Here we are going to use inter cutting between the police officer and the criminal. When the inter-cutting is taking place it would be best to use low key lighting. One reason why it would be best to use low key lighting is because when we are inter cutting the criminal walking we want to create a dark atmosphere. This will help to set the scene. By using low key lighting it will also help us to create a tensed atmosphere which is what we are hoping to create.
From looking into the different types of lighting has now enabled use to visualise the atmosphere we wish to create when using low key lighting.

Music for our Title Sequence

To continue with our coursework we researched into the different music we could use for our opening title sequence. We wanted to try and find something that would suit our theme and also the atmosphere of our title sequence. If we were going to use non copy right music is means that we can only use 20 seconds of this without it being illegal. To find our music for our title sequence we decided to look on YouTube as we thought this would be a useful and appropriate place to find some music. When looking on Youtube we decided that the theme tune of Mission Impossible would suit our title sequence and also fit in with the theme of it. However by using this theme tune we are restricting our titles as we can only legally use 20 seconds of this tune, therefore meaning that are titles can only be 20 seconds long. From listening to this clip we do believe it is the ideal piece of music to go along with our coursework and we feel it would work well when the final product has come together. From the theme tune we believe from 0.03 seconds to 0.23 seconds would be appropriate for out titles and our idea of for the titles. For the titles we are going to have a blue print in the background but it will be coming onto the screen as if its being drawn or put together as the titles appear. One reason why this piece of music would suit this is because its quite fast and also is upbeat. Furthermore it also  fits in with our theme and is quite mysterious.

How to use Premiere Pro

In todays lesson, Josh gave a presentation on how to use the software which we will be using to put together our title sequence for out coursework. The software that we will be using is Adobe Premiere Pro.
To start the presentation he told us how important the seven main areas of premiere are. These are:
  • Format
  • Layout
  • Import
  • Timetable and Edits
  • Transitions
  • Texts and Effects
Format
When using a Sony video camera they record by using pixels by inch. It is important to choose the correct format because if you don't the overall end product wont be of a good quality or can could be pixilated. When importing anything onto the software it is important to look for the correct file. The file we will be using is Sony AVCHD 1080i 25 (50i). He also talked about the size of the screen and how it can effect the quality. He explained that films usually use a wide screen of 16:9 inches and a standard screen is usually 4:3 inches which is a square frame. For example this is used on TVs. When creating our animatic we will be using a standard size. We would use this because our storyboard have been created in the shape of squares.

Layout
The main important aspects of the layout are the timeline and the footage boxes at the top of the screen. The timeline is at the bottom half of the screen. The two boxes (screens) that appear at the top display your sequence so  far( the one of the right) and the clip you are editing ( the one of the left). All of the imported images and videos are displayed on the left hand side of the screen where they can be dragged into the timeline where ever you want them. When placing something into the timeline you can zoom in or out by using the control under neath the timeline. Furthermore at the bottom right hand corner of the screen there are tools such as the selection and razor tool.

Import
To import an image or video onto premiere you first need to make sure that the selected image are in the correct format and also are on the computer itself and are off the camera. When on premiere, to import these files you must click on the button called 'Import'. This is located under the file button. Once the files have been imported they will appear on the left hand side of the screen. These can then be dragged into the timeline and be edited.

Timeline and Edit
Throughout this section, Josh talked about the timeline and the information within the timeline. The timeline collects the footage, image and text. When a certain clip has been dragged into the timeline the red line acting as a selection tool can be used. This tool allows the user to select where they wish to play there sequence from. This tool can also be used when cutting a piece of footage to make sure that they cut it in the right place. Although when cutting you can always drag the footage to the right and it will expanded again up to the amount of footage what is there. To watch your footage you can press the space bar button which will play from where the red line ( selection tool) is situated on your timeline. You can also just simply press the play button to watch the footage as the project progresses. When editing the footage a red horizontal line may appear. When this lines appears it means that the project has not been rendered. To render, all you need to do is press the enter button. By rendering it makes the footage run smoother when being played allowing for the user to see the footage better without it stopping in between. Another tool that can be used to edit the footage is the razor tool. This tool allows the user to cut up the film into smaller sections. However with this tool you can not gain back to footage if you cut it in the wrong place as in this case you are separating the footage.

Transitions
Underneath where the imported footage is placed there is a transition box. Here the user can insert different transition into their footage to create many different effects. One transition which was shown was a 'dissolve'. When selecting this clip and placing it onto the timetable a black/white box will appear over your clip where it has been placed. To get rid of this the effect needs to be placed in between two clips so that when dissolve will happen on both clips.

Text and Effects
In our title sequence we will need to create text which will be displayed over our film. To do this select 'new title' which is located in the menu of 'title'. A separate window will then appear. Here our are able to select and type in the text that you want and also the style that you want it to be displayed in. When you have finished click the 'X' in the top left hand corner. By doing this the text will now appear in the box where the imported footage is displayed. This allows the user to select where in the timeline they want to put this text. To add effects to the text and titles you need to go to the effects tab which is located in the middle part of the top of the page. An example that was shown was how to move text. To do this the text must be selected and you need to select where you want the text to move to. There is then an icon which looks like a clock which the users clicks on and then move the text back to the position it started at.

This presentation has enabled me to know the basics of how to use Adobe Premiere Pro. By now knowing how to edit on this software will help hugely when it comes to editing our coursework. For example we will now be able to insert in different effects and transitions. This should hopefully help with our coursework  by using the different effects where they are needed and by adding in text it might help us to achieve a higher grade. This presentation has helped me understand how to use the programme as this is my main role within my group. I will know be able to edit the footage quicker and hopefully more effectively.

Tuesday 3 January 2012

Filming

From today's discussion, I have realised how much extra footage we actually need and how important it is to have more footage than what we actually need. By having more footage than what we actually need will mean that we have the possibility of being able to select what we wish to use. Whereas, if we had a limited amount of footage this would restrict us as we wouldn't be able to choose our footage as we could only use what we have got. To be able to start our editing stages later on in the process we need to have at least 20 minutes of footage. By having 20 minutes of footage it will allow for us to cut out the footage and use the best parts of it. Our title sequence is going to be 2 minutes long. By having 20 minutes of footage it also allows.

Furthermore when filming the continuity needs to be the same throughout. When shooting we need to have the same type of weather conditions. By having the same type of weather conditions it means that it will keep the consistency and also the atmosphere the same. This is vital that we get this right when filming to ensure that a good amount of footage that we can select what we are going to use from it. In addition to the above the actors need to be wearing the same outfit on all shooting days and also not have changed anything in terms of appearance. For example type of hair cut or hair colour. Without keeping factors like these the same the title sequence won't flow properly and therefore the continuity will not be the same.

Institutional Models

There are three main Institutional Models try to illustrate the relationship between institutions and audience. One model is a theoretical set of ideas. This attempts to explain/ make clear events that we perceive in the real world.

The Manipulative Model

One of the most common models is the manipulative model. This idea sees the audiences as passive and the ways of thinking are easily changed by the media products which they consume. The media and what it portrays and produces is controlled by a few powerful individuals. These individuals can be defined by gender (male), class (middle Class). This ensures that the ideas and values are widely believed and accepted. This is seen as a conscious process. Here, institutions are purposely manipulating their audiences. For example when the media present this as 'news' the audience are led to believe that the representations are the full truth and these are accepted as 'real'.

The Pluralist, Or Market Model

The different ways of thinking about the media can be sometimes called the Pluralist, or the market model. The belief is that different groups of people are constantly competing for audiences. The most successful manage to appeal to the bigger audiences. The model below also suggests that the Pluralists are very active in how they costume and choose their media. If the institutions don't follow the model below they will risk losing a large proportion of its audiences.

The Hegemonic Model

The third model, rests between the two views of the models stated above. The Hegemonic model acknowledges a considerable amount of the media is controlled  by a relatively  small group of people. The viewpoints are embedded into the products that are produced, though promotion of the views is rarely conscious. The dominant views are seen as 'normal' or 'common-sense'. These are given greater emphasis to build up a consensus or agreement among the audience. Although, this is not the case for all of the audience. Some of the audience will try to resist the process, by making choices about their purchase and consumption of products which are challenging the idea of consensus.

Second Draft of the Script

After reading over the script several time, we as a group decided that we needed to look back over the script and make some of the dialogue clever and more straight forward. One reason for this is because if the dialogue is to long, its going to distract the audiences attention as they wont want to listen to this. After reading over the script we sat down and decided on the parts that needed to be redrafted.
The first part that we decided to look back over was when the female protagonist is in a dark room with an image of Hugo being reflected from a projector onto the wall.

Below is the first part of the script we have decided to edit.

Female in suit

Hugo Grant, the main man, the insider. He's is the one that thinks it all up, the brains. He's is in a class of his own, only does the big raids, never been convicted. It's is a matter of pride, of every fraud investigator in the country, no the world, to get this man behind bars. He has stolen things that you would never believe, The Mona Lisa, The Shrouds of Turin, The Works of Shakespeare, The Leo Diamond and The Scream to name some. Rumours are that this is his last score. We miss him this time, it is game over, no second chances.

He is not about robbing little old ladies out of their pensions. He is the big league. Stealing to order.
Hugo Grant thinks he is cleverer then us, he thinks he has the upper hand, but there is no way he can get away this time. Lets catch him, Lets prove him wrong.

When looking back over this section of the script, I believe that it needs to be more straight forward and to the point. One reason for this is because if we do not cut this bit down its going to be to long for the actual scene and also this is not going to keep the audience interested.  Above I have underlined in red the parts of the script that I believe don't need to be there. However, when taking sections out there is also the opportunity the rephrase some areas which will make it less wordy. In blue and underlined are the parts that could be added in. This section of the script does need editing more, but this is what I first though could be edited. Once we have looked at the script and edited some parts of it we are going to piece it together and see if it is any better to what it was before.
