Thriller Movies

My first piece of research is to watch the opening two minutes if previous thrillers to see if there are any similarties to them or any differences and how are they different. I am also going to look at the camera angles, the colours used in the titles,  camera distance and lighting. These are the main aspects that you would expect to be able to pick up on the in the opening two mintues.

Plot:
Two men from opposite sides of the law are undercover within the Massachusetts State Police and the Irish mafia, but violence and bloodshed boil when discoveries are made, and the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities.

·         Colours used in the titles: red, white and black
·         This film starts with a particular event before the titles start.
An Analyse of the opening two minutes of the Black Swan 2010 (15)

The opening of the film starts with the titles. We see that the background colour here is black. This contrasts with the white writing that is used for the titles. The text here is formatted in Sans Serif. This type of font stands out from just using Serif. One reason why it stands out is because its bold and eye-catching. The way the editors have produced the titles portrays to ye a sense of femininaty. This font has also been used as 'Black Swan' has been written in capital letters. By the name of the film being in capital letters is stands out more to use as the audience and is  also grabs the audience attention in the opening few minutes just by making the titles stand out.

The opening of the film:

Plot:
This movie is about a ballet dancer who wins the lead in the "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette. However she slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan who she feared she would be like.

The Black Swan opens with an establishing show of Nina in the centre of the stage as the lights shone upon her. Once the lights are shining upon here we here some music being played and we get a mid-close up of Nina's feet. This portrays to use her passion for dance. In addition to this we spot-light is also tracking her as she is dancing. This makes her seem like a significant character. After this mid-close-ups are uses throughout until the end of her dance. Whilst Nina was dancing we see a close-up shot of a male figure that seems to be walking up to her.  This creates an uneven atmosphere as this male figure could be harmful towards her. The camera then follows them both around panning and tracking them both. This then follows into a close-up of Nina, where we see her scared and pertrified facial expressions. Futhermore this could also mean that Nina knows who is male figure is and is aware of the harm he can cause. When Nina walks of the stage we see a mid- shot of her which allows us to see her facials expressions which is then shortly followed by a long shot which allows us to see the stage. The camera then follows them both around making sure that we see the male figure always looking back on Nina as if he is watching her every step. Shortley after Nina has walked of the stage the spotlight starts to fade one bit at a time the theatre becomes darker and darker. This signifies that it is the end of Ninas dance. Furthermore  it also suggests the atmosphere of the man figure following her.

The music played throughout the extract is a fast upbeat piece of music towards to end of Ninas dance. It is famously used in many films and is a classic. When she starts dancing we hear the music softfully and gracefully. This makes the atmosphere seem extremley peaceful. When the male figure walks up to Nina we hear the music becoming much louder. This makes use feels as if they're in a hurry to finish this dance. This piece of music that is played throughout Nina's opening dance symbolises that its the end of something.

As Nina starts to dance the spotlight reveals the black stage she is on. We see that she in a white coloured dress. This colour presents purity and also peace. These two colours contrast with the opening of the film as here these two colours are used. This symbolises to us the black swan and the white swan who Nina was. There is no lighting on the stage or around the stage until the spotlight shines on Nina.
Batman Begins 2005 (12):
Plot:
Bruce Wayne has watched his home, Gotham City, turn into a crime infested abyss throughout his entire life, so he decides to become the hero Gotham needs- Batman.
Conventions of the opening:
  • ·         Colours- Black, Blue
  • ·         Text- yellow
·   The camera was zoomed in focusing on the batman sign and then gradually zoomed out, turning the camera from different viewpoints.
·         Soundtrack: The soundtrack is very slow and quite at the start and gradually gets louder and louder. This builds up the atmosphere and also creates tension.

       The Sixth Sense 1999(15):
Plot:
A boy who communicates with spirits that don't know they're dead seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist.

·    In the titles we see the colours of Black and white being used. The colour of black is used as the backdrop and the white is used for the text. We see that Sans Serif font has been used here. This font is simple and bold. Once the name of the film had been displayed we slowly see it disappear letter by letter.
·    As soon as the titles are finished we see a close up of a light bulb as it turns on slowly. This creates a dark atmosphere until the light bulb turns on. This then goes on into a women walking down what looks like some cellar stairs. The setting here is very dark and grey. The camera then gives us a long shot from behind a wine rack of her looking at the wine. As she walks slowly towards the camera we get s close-up of this women face. The camera then tracks the women as she look down the different shelves of the rack. When she picks out a bottle of wine the camera zooms in onto the women, this then goes into a long shot of the women. As she walk slowly towards the camera she starts running. This portrays that she is frightend or has heard something or someone. Here the atmosphere is dark and dull.

Similarities of the film's opening 2 minutes:
  • ·         They all seem to play the opening titles over a black or white background.
  • ·         The text is usually in the colour of black or white depending on the background.
  • ·         Non-diegetic music is played to set the mood of the thriller. ( Non-diegetic= sounds whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action.)
  • ·         Tracking and Panning are commonly used in the opening few minutes.
  • ·         Zooming in was used in The Sixth Scene

From doing this research I have found out that many of the thriller film opening two minutes and the title scene is very dark. This is shown through the use of the colours black, grey and white. These three colours have been used in most of the title scenes. This conveys to us instantly that is going to be a thriller or a horror movie. The music that is being played also  tends of be very slow and then very upbeat. This builds up the tension. From doing this research, it will help us to decide the conventions of a 'thriller' movie and will help us to make a decision on how our 'thriller' opener should be like.

  1. Very Good Alice! What you need to think about is what action did you see in the openings? What were the key differences? You will need to revisit these openings in terms of what you learn about character, editing ( WHEN YOU ARE TAUGHT IT) style of music and positioning of titles. Be more specific in your analysis. Can you upload any of the openings for your blog? This would be FAB! Look at those we have uploaded on the VLE!
